About this diluent

Saline, without the added preservative.

Two saline vials can show the same concentration and still have different instructions. For this Hospira presentation, the preservative-free formulation and single-dose container belong together.

What is in this saline diluent?

The formulation contains sodium chloride in water for injection. At 0.9%, each milliliter supplies 9 mg of sodium chloride. Hospira describes it as an isotonic solution, with no antimicrobial preservative or added buffer.

It is used to dissolve or dilute compatible injectable medicines. The medicine’s instructions determine the appropriate diluent and preparation; a saline concentration alone cannot establish compatibility. [2]

Why preservative content matters

This product does not contain benzyl alcohol. Bacteriostatic saline is a different formulation that includes an antimicrobial preservative, even though the sodium chloride concentration may also be 0.9%. Reading the complete product name distinguishes those formulations.

Preservative-free does not mean that a vial stays sterile after opening regardless of handling. Aseptic preparation remains necessary, and a single-dose vial can become a source of infection if it is contaminated or reused inappropriately. [2] [3] [4]

The single-dose container sets a boundary

The reference shown is a 10 mL plastic Fliptop vial. Pfizer lists its manufacturer pack as 25 individual vials. The 10 mL describes one vial’s contents, not a medication dose or a requirement to use the entire volume.

A single-dose vial is intended for one patient during one case, procedure or injection. CDC says leftover contents should not be saved for another use, even for the same person. A prepared medication also has its own storage and stability instructions, which cannot be inferred from the unopened diluent’s expiration date. [1] [2] [3]

Use & handling

Important information

  • Match the complete product. This small-volume injection diluent is not a reference for every product called saline.
  • Single-dose means one use. Discard unused contents instead of saving them for a later preparation.
  • The medicine sets the requirements. Compatibility, preparation and any storage after mixing depend on the medicine’s instructions.

Ask your clinician or pharmacist to confirm the exact formulation for your prescription. [2]

Common questions

Your questions, answered

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. This Hospira injection product is labeled prescription only. [2]

Does this vial contain benzyl alcohol?

No. This formulation contains no antimicrobial preservative. Bacteriostatic saline is a separate formulation that includes benzyl alcohol. [2] [4]

Can I save unused saline from this vial?

No. CDC advises against keeping single-dose leftovers for another use, even for the same person. [3]

Can I substitute it for bacteriostatic saline?

Do not assume the products are interchangeable. The medicine’s instructions determine the required diluent. [2] See how bacteriostatic saline differs.

How should it be stored?

The label specifies 20–25°C (68–77°F). A prepared medicine has separate storage and stability requirements; follow its manufacturer’s instructions. [2]
